Chapter 7 - Rewards   MAKE SURE YOUR REWARDS ARE REWARDING

You might think a book on rewards would talk a lot about rewards. But remember, I’m not talking about traditional reward programs. I’m talking about using rewards to accelerate profits NOW. And I believe the main thing about rewards is that they should be rewarding.

But trying to guess what a particular person will find rewarding is like trying to forecast the weather. And we all know how accurate weather forecasters are.

I do have some thoughts (no surprise to you) on how to make rewards more rewarding, and this chapter covers three main ways:

1. Give people a choice.
2. Catch people doing things right (random reinforcement).
3. Combine individual and team rewards.

Chapter 8 - Checklist   CHECK YOUR FOCUS

You’ve learned how to avoid the two most common mistakes managers make with rewards: leaving a program in place for a long time (more than six months) and using compensation as a reward.

You’ve also thought about how to fund rewards and where to find the money.

Now, before you launch your program, you’ll need a checklist so you don’t make any of the common pre-trip and in-flight mistakes that cause programs to crash and burn. This checklist encompasses some key topics that, considered carefully, will help you maintain a sharper focus.
